Twenty-five new sheet music publications
Festival Forbidden Music Regained 2024
In keeping with tradition, 25 new sheet music publications will be presented at the upcoming edition. This means that a total of 125 works have been published thanks to the combined efforts of the Leo Smit Foundation, the Netherlands Music Institute and publisher Donemus.
A selection of these works will be performed during two concerts by master students from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Works by Leo Smit, Dick Kattenburg, Julius Hijman, Lex van Delden, Rosy Wertheim, Henriëtte Bosmans and many others will be performed.
Each composer will be introduced during the concerts by a short biographical film. This video series was made by Joost Honselaar and narrated by Hans Haffmans.
Guest ensemble Symphonova conducted by Shelley Katz
In the third and final concert, conductor Shelley Katz of the English ensemble Symphonova will perform a number of orchestral pieces. Conductor Shelley Katz has developed a special advanced technique with which he can produce an orchestral sound with a small ensemble. This offers an interesting solution for works that have never been heard in a concert hall before.
By studying them and performing them, you can make a case for unknown ‘unheard’ music. Using this technique, the ensemble recorded a number of works by persecuted composers earlier this year for the project ‘Reawakening suppressed music’. At the festival, Katz will play works by Leo Smit, Rosy Wertheim, Bob Hanf, Johanna Bordewijk-Roepman and Hans Krieg with soprano Channa Malkin.
The day after the festival, they will give workshops for young composers and conductors to demonstrate this new technique.

Let forbidden music sound again
In the Second World War, many composers were silenced because of their Jewish descent or their resistance. Their music was forbidden. The Leo Smit Stichting carries out research, tells composers' stories, makes sheet music available and performs forgotten music. Together with musicians, programmers, researchers and listeners we give composers their rightful place in music history.
