A new generation of ambassadors

During the last year of his Masters studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, pianist Dimitri Malignan researched lives and music of Jewish composers killed in the Holocaust. His work resulted in a project ‘Missing Voices’, a series of concerts and a short documentary film.

With all my heart I recommend this film ‘Missing Voices’. It had a strong personal impact on me. This is what we’ve been aiming at since the start of the Leo Smit Foundation: to give back murdered and forgotten composers their audience worldwide, and especially an audience of young musicians. - Eleonore Pameijer.

What a wonderful surprise, this film by Dimitri Malignan! The French/Rumanian pianist shows strong ethical commitment when he motivates his project: it would be a posthumous victory for the Nazi’s if the music of murdered Jewish composers were never to be performed again. ‘They suffered a double penalty: they were killed and forgotten – and I find it is our duty as musicians to make their music come to life again.’ - Albert van der Schoot
